The Loudoun County High School varsity swimming teams were defeated by Riverside High School on Friday, January 17 at Ida Lee Recreation Center by a combined score of 189 - 383. The Raiders suffered their second loss of the season, 96-190 and the Lady Raiders fell 93-193. The Lady Raiders started the night off strong with a victory and state-qualifying performance in 200-yard Medley Relay. Sophomore Gretchen Allen, Sophomore Kristen Chang, Junior Lexie Vanderloo, and Senior Briana Arroyo clocked a time of 1:55.70 for their first relay state-qualifying time of the season. Along with the strong relay performance, the Lady Raiders had some outstanding individual performances. Vanderloo (Jr.) picked up victories and season-best times in the Girls 200-yard Freestyle and Girls 100-yard Butterfly. Arroyo (Sr.) had her best meet of the season posting season-best times in the 50-yard Freestyle and 100-yard Butterfly. Allen (So.) joined in with season-best times of her own in the 100-yard Freestyle and 100-yard Backstroke, securing the regional qualifying time in her first event while narrowly missing the regional qualifying time in the latter. On the boys side, Senior Colby Koenig and Junior Gavin Wagner continued their successful seasons with strong individual performances. Koenig (Sr.) swam to victory in the 100-yard Butterfly in a state-qualifying time of 54.43. Wagner (Jr.) then swam to a close second place finish in the 100-yard Backstroke in a state-qualifying time of 54.18. During the break, the varsity swimming teams held Senior Night festivities to celebrate their amazing Senior class. Congratulations to Maddie Allen, Briana Arroyo, McKenna Blest, Josie Boyle, Nicole Contras, Trevor Hamilton, Brian Hays, Shane Hunter, Colby Koenig, Caroline Layne, Nicholas Maskalenko, Corbin Nadeau, Oliver Olsen, and Abby Ramberg on outstanding careers as members of the Loudoun County High School varsity swimming programs.
