The Loudoun County High School varsity swimming teams concluded their back-to-back meet weekend on Saturday, January 4 at Ida Lee Recreation Center with a victory over Heritage High School by a combined score of 320 – 251. The Lady Raiders defeated the Lady Pride 179 – 106, while the Raiders suffered their first loss of season, 145 – 141, in a very close meet.
The Raiders and Lady Raiders began the meet with victories in the Boy’s and Girl’s 200-yard Medley Relays. The Raiders team of Junior Gavin Wagner, Freshman J.P. Vanderloo, Senior Colby Koenig, and Senior Shane Hunter won in a final time of 1:45.72, while the Lady Raiders team of Sophomore Gretchen Allen, Sophomore Kristen Chang, Junior Lexie Vanderloo, and Senior Briana Arroyo swam to victory in a regional-qualifying time of 1:59.60.
In the first individual events of the evening, both teams had strong performances. Wagner (Jr.) won the Boys 200-yard Freestyle in 2:00.99. Freshman Leah Bianchinni, Senior Abby Ramberg, and Junior Caroline Zanetti swept first through third place in a very exciting Girls 200-yard Freestyle with times of 2:32.78, 2:33.68, and 2.33.82. Koenig (Sr.) and Hunter (Sr.) then swam to second and third in the 200-yard Individual Medley, both swimming regional-qualifying times of 2:08.47 and 2:09.78. Following the boys, Arroyo (Sr.) and teammate, fellow Senior Caroline Layne went on to finish second and third in the Girls 200-yard Individual Medley with times of 2:45.66 and 2:50.50. The Raiders and Lady Raiders wrapped up the first portion of the meet with a strong performance in the 50-yard Freestyle. Vanderloo (Fr.) took third for the boys in 25.52, while Allen (So.), Chang (So.), and Sophomore Jane Cassidy swept first through third in a tight race for the girls in times of 27.23, 27.94, and 28.62.
Immediately following the break, the Raiders and Lady Raiders started right where they left off. In the first event, the Boys 100-yard Butterfly, Junior Nick Durot and Freshman Barrett Larson finished second and third with times of 1:05.37 and 1:06.66. Junior Katelyn O’Dea followed her teammates with a second place finish of her own in the Girls 100-yard Butterfly with a time of 1:16.56. Vanderloo (Jr.) then continued her dominance in the pool winning the Girls 100-yard Freestyle with a new state-qualifying time of 55.62. Raiders Wagner (Jr.), Koenig, and Senior Brian Hays then went on to sweep first through third in the Boys 500-yard Freestyle in times of 5:27.18, 5:57.28, and 6:08.75. On the girls side, Junior Nami Young claimed victory in a time of 6:47.78. To conclude the middle portion of the meet, the Raiders and Lady Raiders swam to second place and first place in the Boy’s and Girl’s 200-yard Freestyle Relay. The team of Senior Oliver Olsen, Durot (Jr.), Junior Carson Aho, and Senior Cameron Suttie swam to second place in a time of 1:46.07, while the team of Arroyo (Sr.), Allen (So.), Vanderloo (Jr.), and Chang (So.) claimed victory for the girls in a event-winning time of 1:50.28.
In the final three individual events of the evening, the boys and girls continued to swim fast and place well! Hunter (Sr.) and Vanderloo (Fr.) took first and second in the Boys 100-yard Backstroke, with Hunter swimming a regional-qualifying time of 59.13. Allen (Sr.) and Ramberg (Sr.) claimed second and third in the Girls 100-yard Backstroke. Senior Trevor Hamilton swam to third in the Boys 100-yard Breaststroke. Chang (So.) and Vanderloo (Jr.) then swam to first and second in the Girls 100-yard Breaststroke, narrowly missing the regional-qualifying time. In the final event of the night, the 400-yard Freestyle Relay, the boys team of Wagner (Jr.), Koenig (Sr.), Vanderloo (Fr.), and Hunter (Sr.) finished in second place with a time of 3:29.13, while the girls teams of Young (Jr.), Ramberg (Sr.), O’Dea (Jr.), Cassidy (So.) and Senior Josie Boyle, Zanetti (Jr.), Freshman Valerie Encinas, Bianchini (Fr.) took first and second place.
The coaching staff continues to be impressed with the team’s early success. The Raiders and Lady Raiders continue to achieve state-and regional-qualifying time, season-best times, personal-best times, and continue compete hard in every event. The Raiders and Lady Raiders will return to the pool on Saturday, January 11 to face the Vikings of Loudoun Valley High School at Ida Lee Recreation at 6:00 pm.
